This custom home in Morgantown's Suncrest neighborhood showcases the beauty that comes from thoughtful collaboration between client, builder, and design professionals. Every room reflects quality craftsmanship and attention to detail, from its striking brick and stone exterior to the refined interior finishes.

Exterior Details
One of the standout features of this home is its exterior: a combination of traditional red brick with locally quarried sandstone corners. The detailed brickwork—herringbone patterns, cornerstones, and arched window insets—adds timeless character. Every sandstone corner was hand-fitted on site by Mike McAdams Masonry, reinforcing the custom nature of the build.

Interior Craftsmanship
Inside, this home shines with bespoke details. Curved windows, 8-foot interior doors, and extensive custom cabinetry by Hunn Cabinet Co. elevate the everyday. One of the most unique features is the curved metal handrail in the grand entry, hand-forged by local blacksmith Sky Forge Metalworks. Throughout the home, trim work and wood detailing echo the homeowners’ vision and our shared commitment to craftsmanship.

New Construction: Energy Efficient Home

Nicknamed "The Yeti House" for its striking white-and-black exterior and ultra-insulated construction, this home sits on a scenic knoll overlooking expansive West Virginia views.  Rising Sun designed the home for extreme energy efficiency by building 12-inch double-stud walls with R-45 insulation and an R-60 ceiling to create a super-tight shell.

Designed as a tranquil retreat, this home offers the perfect blend of comfort, privacy, and natural beauty. The unique layout places the kitchen, living area, and master suite on the upper floor, creating a serene, elevated space that maximizes both views and relaxation. Below, two additional bedrooms, each with its own full bath, ensure a restful and peaceful stay.
A striking tall stone fireplace adds a touch of warmth to the interior, making it the perfect spot for quiet, cozy moments.

Many areas were fixed with new wiring, the addition of lighting, and the repair of plaster and trim. The areas that received the most change were the basement, first-floor bathroom, and attic space.

Addition: Solomon Estates Timber frame

Winner of 2021 HBAWV Best of West Virginia Building Award for Remodeling. Rising Sun was honored to be chosen to design and build a 2400SF 2-story addition to connect a detached garage and residence. 

The windy location needed an enclosed space with lots of access to the outdoors for entertaining guests. This addition features large decks and patios, high ceilings, a custom dual-sided stoned wood burning fireplace, a full kitchen, and a Doug fir timber frame.

The basement features a wine storage room and tasting area with walnut lined elevator and a garage for lawn care and implements. Rising Sun used ICF foundation and SIPS walls to make the structure extremely energy efficient.  Additionally, we added standing seam and synthetic slate shingle roofing. We made repairs and timber frame upgrades to the existing entrance and siding/stone so the whole house would match and gave it all the same paint color. Lots of effort was put into matching the roof/soffit/fascia/windows/paint color.

We love the open floor of this contemporary 1,000 sq foot renovation in Cheat Lake, Morgantown, West Virginia. Focused on “flexibility, zones, and storage" this house was transformed into a home the family is eager to retreat into.

This unique hybrid timber frame was built using locally sourced materials and features custom cabinets and tile. Especially beautiful is the location of this home; it has over an 180 degree Appalachian view scape! 

This home was featured in Morgantown Magazine in a great write-up about Matt Thorn, owner of Mountain Craft Wide Plank.

Custom Home: Timber Frame New Construction

Facelift: Home Exterior

The homeowner reached out to us to replace the aging T1-11 siding on their home, which had developed areas of rot. We collaborated closely to design a visually appealing exterior, combining both horizontal and vertical elements for added character. The new exterior features Hardie Board Lap Siding paired with Board and Batten accents, creating a modern yet timeless look. For trim, we used LP Trim, which we’ve found offers superior performance compared to Hardie trim. Our work also included replacing the soffit, fascia, and drip edge, as well as installing a new skylight in the sunroom to bring in natural light. All siding and trim were painted on-site for a clean, cohesive finish.

Addition and Renovation: Mon County Farmhouse

As seen in Country Living Magazine - June 2019 edition. Awarded "Best Residential Remodeling Class IV" for Best of WV Building Award by HBAWV.

Built in 1988, Rising Sun Construction renovated this 3100 sq. ft. Mon County farmhouse situated on a 20.9 acre 1870's homestead in 2018. We worked with many, many talented local craftsmen to complete this project. One of the perks of this project: a beautiful job site!

This beautiful 3-bedroom contemporary home was built with energy efficient Superior Walls and Zip-R sheeting (insulation). We especially love the the design of the corner deck, laundry room butcher block counters, and marble tops in the bathrooms. Total finished space (first and second floor) 2,146 sqft.

This 156 SF kitchen renovation included the conversion of a separate dining area. This allowed for a more open concept, further connecting the spaces.

In a traditional home, the frame structural work is behind the drywall. In a timber frame home, the structure of the home is exposed. The structure itself becomes an architectural and aesthetic feature. 
 
We love timber frame homes because we are especially proud of the structures we can provide. We specialize our timber frames to the area it is being built – to best aesthetically combine the house and the landscape. We see timber frame homes as true works of art.

This beautiful Suncrest home was originally built in 1985. This 5 bedroom and 5.5 bath home features oversized living spaces, vaulted ceilings, wrap-around deck, and laundry rooms on each floor. The remodel included a kitchen make-over with 48" Dacor Stove, 3 sinks, beverage center and breakfast alcove with built-in storage under the seats. The master bedroom combines sleeping and a sitting area with a customized master bathroom.
